Traditional Chinese culture believes that “the divine dog keeps good fortune, bringing prosperity to all walks of life on earth.” Hoping to pass down the appeal of Chinese culture, as well as convey best wishes for those born in the Year of the Dog, FRANZ presents ingeniously created porcelain pieces sending the message of “dogs bringing peaceful days while plum blossoms welcoming the auspicious spring,” and the belief that dogs “secure the house, protect their masters, and bring wealth and safety.”

The Dog Brings Safety and Prosperity

FRANZ designer Johnny Ho drew on the dog – a symbol of both the home as a sanctuary and offering hospitality – to create the “A Happy Family” porcelain piece. It features a family of Golden Retrievers enjoying each other’s warm company against the backdrop of a traditional Chinese-style garden, suggesting an Eastern cultural concept of family. Moreover, the vase takes the shape of the gold ingot, which therefore indicates peace, happiness, and prosperity, all guarded by dogs. The “Continuous Good Fortune” porcelain piece also features a Golden Retriever standing on a pile of gold ingots, an image suggesting that love for living creatures will be rewarded with blessings. The green ring of peony leaves is also a symbol of lasting wealth and high-spirited life.

For example, the Lion Dog, also known as the “blessing dog,” is a lively and elegant toy dog that used to be kept in the Chinese imperial court; FRANZ designers got their inspirational cue from them. The designers infused the message of “the dog bringing wealth” into daily life through porcelain works like the “Wealth and Prestige” salt and pepper shakers or the “Prosperity and Luck” porcelain figurine, desiring to convey the blessings of wealth and dignity as well as to bring prosperity and peace throughout the year. Moreover, the sought-after blue-and-white series is primarily based on the Whippet, a favorite dog breed in the West. The “Everlasting Spring and Wealth” porcelain figurine, for example, features a sitting Whippet embracing perennial rose periwinkles and an ancient round coin with a square hole, symbolizing lasting health and wealth.
