Great Rejoicing
Designer Johnny Ho craftily sculpted on a long bamboo two lovely magpies, which perch together in a way that suggests they are chatting or merrily overlooking the hustle and bustle down below. Moreover, the bamboo symbolizes “getting promoted to a higher position” in the East, and the magpies represent happiness and blessings, both combining to send a message of good luck and double happiness.
The magpies’ wings give a gloss of blue and purple in the bright sun. During the process of making the porcelain piece, the painter attentively added colors to the magpies using various painting techniques, hoping to bring life to the work with every hue painted on the birds’ wings. The magpies were so vividly sculpted that they seem to be about to soar into the azure sky.
