Iris Blossom–Van Gogh Collection
Limited Edition of 988 Pieces
Adopting the “underglaze painting” technique to present the texture and vivid brushstrokes of Van Gogh’s oil paintings
The iris blossom played a very important role in the creative career of Van Gogh, who liked to depict blossoms to express his feelings about nature and views on life.
In 1889 and 1890, Van Gogh stayed in a psychiatric hospital in the southern French village of Saint-Remy, where he created many flower still lifes. One of them was Irises, 1890, a painting with an ingenious composition of bluish-purple and yellow colors, oozing a modern flavor through a stark contrast of the two hues.
The Iris Blossom vase from the Van Gogh collection draws on this masterpiece, featuring smooth, vivid purple iris petals swaying with elegance in a peculiar rhythm.
As bright and charming as spring, the blossoms unfold to form a blaze of colors that will deeply touch the viewer.
• Using the delicate underglaze painting technique to show the texture and brushstrokes of Van Gogh’s painting
The creation of this piece presented two thorny issues: deformation during firing and difficulty of painting the clay.
After considerable discussion, the designer, sculptor, and painter decided to passionately and intricately sculpt the work, and then use the delicate underglaze painting technique to decorate it to vividly show the texture and brushstrokes of Van Gogh’s oil painting.
